Behind closed doors: Police women battle domestic violence

Close to half of all women in Bosnia and Herzegovina have experienced some form of violence, mostly at the hands of their own partners. Yet only 5 percent seek help, because of stigma and the perception that abuse is something to be dealt with “at home”. Now a group of women police officers have launched a formal initiative to ensure women get better, quicker help and the perpetrators get punished.

The network has been training fellow officers on how to handle domestic violence cases, while also waging a wider battle from within male-dominated law enforcement for a more equal society.

This video was produced in collaboration with the Thompson Reuters Foundation.
