Loved and loathed: Raising a gay son in Ukraine

“I was homophobic, but I’m not contagious anymore.” Olena, mother of a gay son, struggled with her son’s identity for years. Now she is using her experience to help other parents in Ukraine and beyond to also come to terms with their children.

Olena’s efforts come against the backdrop of a country where almost half of all people say LGBTQI people can or should have their rights restricted (based on The Human Rights Progress Study, conducted by UNDP 2018). UNDP is working with journalists to shatter existing myths and stereotypes and civil society organizations to protect human rights and fight anti-LGBTQI sentiment.
