The sand, the saxaul and the ghost sea

The drying up of Kazakhstan’s Aral Sea has brought devastating effects on the people who live and work near it. Fishing and farming became difficult and shifting sands encroached many homes. One farmer’s brilliant idea – planting special trees to protect his house – sparked interest across the region.

Together with the local communities, UNDP supported the approach across the village and region. Could it help bring the sea back to life?
